A Word From Under the Tent (Fredericton, NB)
"Bill McLaughlin’s Under the Tent ministry is a ‘boots on the ground’ initiative offering grace and hope ministry. Along with an amazing team of volunteers, they touch the lives of those on the street that most people avoid. They do it from a heart full of the love of Jesus, they do it with respect, they do it with compassion, they do it without judgment. This ministry models the words of Jesus: “'I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.' Mat. 25:35-36 NIV" - Verner Drost, ACOP Atlantic Regional Director
A beautiful morning today, but cold overnight. Imagine having to wake up outside in this chill, provided you were even able to get some sleep. This is the stark reality of being homeless. I hear the term “unhoused” used a lot, which seems a bit cold to me, only because “home” and “house” are two different words with different connotations. Really, homeless people are in search of a home. Home and heart go together for me. That is why the street family has such drawing power. The street becomes home because the street people quickly become family, and they have heart. Believe me, if you lost your home and ended up spending a couple nights alone on the street, you would quickly realize there is a culture alive and well on the streets. This culture is based upon survival and populated with survivalists, many of whom you will quickly become acquainted with and soon learn how to survive with.
Under the Tent is dedicated to all who have found themselves homeless for one reason or another. If you have lost your hope, we are there to lend you some of ours; we want to be a friend along the way. We are a collaborative outreach with helping hands in many areas of supply, such as food, clothing, advocacy, and encouragement. We have been blessed by many and trust we are likewise a blessing. I am humbled and amazed by the family we serve and serve with.
Unconditional love is the thread that runs through all of Under the Tent’s initiatives. May we never “grow weary of well doing, for we will reap a harvest if we don’t give up.” Thank you to our supporters and to the downtown merchants who have helped us. Together, we can get it done.
